Colombia Finca El Faldon

Joy and generosity. That’s what I found when I got to visit Arnulfo Leguizamo’s farm in San Augustin, Colombia. This storied figure has put this region of Huila on the specialty map ever since his Cup of Excellence win in 2011 and has continued to invest in his own farm and those around him. The pride he has in his work and family radiated off him like a sunset as he hosted a group of us at his main farm.

Café Imports buys Arnulfo’s coffee almost sight unseen every year because of the continued investment they both have put into each other and their relationship. Rather than inviting complacency, however, it has proven to be a wonderfully upward cycle of investment that drives quality up, which then allows for higher prices to be paid, which then fosters more investment, etc It’s one of those stories that you want to believe happens in the specialty world but so often we don’t get to see that thesis play out. Arnulfo’s coffees are consistently some of my favorite coffees that I get to taste from this region, and I am beyond excited to share this lot with you all.

In the cup, this coffee is all kinds of elegant. The striking thing about this coffee and it’s tasting notes go hand in hand; let me explain:

Most coffees that you taste, even the “single-origin” ones, are some version of a blend. Coffee very rarely ripens all at the same time and even on the same farm there are valleys and ridges that cause development to stagger during the harvest season. Add to the mix that a lot of farms don’t differentiate between the several different varieties they have at their farm and you can see why this coffee starts to be even MORE special than its flavor notes. The fact that Arnulfo has the ability to not only tell you the varieties and cultivars that exist on his farm, but also harvest them, process them, and keep track of them to create an intentional blend starts to take you into a territory where Dom Leguizamo is acting more like a wine maker than a traditional coffee producer.

I wish I was adept enough to tell you which of these flavor notes corresponds to each varietal but what I can tell you is that this cup is all kinds of comfort and elegance combined. A lovely milk chocolate with raw cacao makes up the front while a very piquant passionfruit opens the middle that then dissolves into a pleasantly sweet yellow delicious apple in the finish. It’s a perfect mirror to the man himself who unassumingly will shake your hand and greet you with a smile-but look deeper and you’ll see the glint of a trophy in the background.

Enjoy!
